A practical little grimoire — where the cards come from and how to read them.
The Lenormand descends from Das Spiel der Hoffnung ("The Game of Hope"), published in Nuremberg in 1799. After the death of the celebrated Parisian cartomancer Marie-Anne Lenormand (1772–1843), publishers attached her name to the deck — though she never used these cards herself. The 36-card "Petit Lenormand" reading system was codified in the mid-1800s and has been read ever since.
Where Tarot explores the why, Lenormand answers the how — concrete, everyday, practical. Its heart is that cards are read in pairs and combinations, never quite alone: a noun and a modifier. Fish beside Ship becomes "income from travel"; Heart beside Ring becomes "a loving commitment."
The cards carry a sense of time — Rider is swift, Anchor is slow, Stars unfold by night. Many also describe people: the Snake a cunning rival, the Bear a powerful protector, the Dog a loyal friend. The Gentleman and Lady stand for the querent themselves.
